None of these were glamorous. Several reshaped whole industries, and one of them made tall buildings possible.
The inventions that change most are rarely the ones that look impressive. A steel box with standard corner fittings did more to reshape world trade than any ship design, because it removed the labour of unpacking and repacking cargo at every stage of a journey. A water-filled bend in a drainpipe did more for urban health than most nineteenth-century medicine. What these ten have in common is that each removed a bottleneck nobody had identified as one. The explanations give the date and, where it is interesting, the reason for the delay: several of these ideas existed for decades before a version arrived that actually worked in daily use.

Why: Malcom McLean ran a trucking firm and converted a tanker to carry loaded trailers in 1956. Loading costs fell so far that it became sensible to split manufacturing across continents.

Why: The first commercial scan, in 1974, was on a packet of chewing gum. The number identifies the product only; the price lives in the shop's own database.

Why: Laszlo Biro, a newspaper editor, noticed that printing ink dried far faster than writing ink. Thicker ink needed a rolling ball to feed it onto the page at all.

Why: A reliable design arrived in 1913, and the name "zipper" came from a boot company in 1923. Clothing designers only adopted it properly in the 1930s.

Why: He had the rope cut while standing on the platform at a New York exhibition. Passenger lifts, and so tall buildings, depended on persuading people they were survivable.

Why: The French government offered a prize, which Nicolas Appert won in 1810 using sealed glass jars. The tin can appeared the same year, decades ahead of any decent opener.
Answer: D. Holding a plug of water that blocks sewer gas
Why: Alexander Cumming patented it in 1775. It is among the cheapest public health devices ever designed and the shape has barely changed since.
Answer: C. Humidity in a printing plant
Why: Willis Carrier's 1902 system was meant to stop paper swelling and colour printing going out of register. Cooling for human comfort came later, and cinemas were among the first buildings to advertise it.

Why: Putting the eye at the tip let a second thread lock the stitch from underneath. Elias Howe patented a version in 1846 and spent years in court against Isaac Singer.

Why: James Dewar built it in 1892 to hold liquefied gases, not tea. The silvered surface deals with radiation while the vacuum handles conduction and convection.
