This is the Cookie Policy for QuizKite, accessible from quizkite.com. It is deliberately specific: rather than saying we use cookies "to improve your experience", it names each one and states what it is for.

What are cookies

As is common practice with almost all professional websites, this site uses cookies, which are tiny files that are downloaded to your computer to improve your experience. This page describes what information they gather, how we use it, and why we sometimes need to store these cookies. We will also share how you can prevent these cookies from being stored, however this may downgrade or break certain elements of the site's functionality.

Cookies and local storage are not the same thing

A cookie is a small file your browser sends back to a server with each request. Local storage is a larger store that stays in your browser and is never automatically transmitted anywhere.

This distinction matters here, because QuizKite keeps most of what it remembers about you in local storage. Your scores, streak, coins and preferences sit on your device and are not sent to us. We could not read them if we wanted to.

How we use cookies

We use cookies for a variety of reasons detailed below. Unfortunately, in most cases there are no industry standard options for disabling cookies without completely disabling the functionality and features they add to this site. It is recommended that you leave on all cookies if you are not sure whether you need them or not, in case they are used to provide a service that you use.

The cookies we set

Essential cookies

These are needed for the site to function. They carry no advertising or profiling purpose.

• Session cookie. Set when a session begins. It holds a random identifier that lets the server recognise a series of requests as belonging to the same visit — necessary for signing in, for the contact form's security token, and for recording that a quiz attempt came from one person rather than many. It expires when you close your browser.

Account related cookies

If you create an account with us, we use cookies for the management of the signup process and general administration. These cookies will usually be deleted when you log out, however in some cases they may remain afterwards to remember your site preferences when logged out.

Site preferences cookies and local storage

In order to provide you with a good experience on this site, we provide the functionality to set your preferences for how the site runs when you use it. In order to remember your preferences, we need to store this information on your device. None of the following is transmitted to us, and all of it can be removed by clearing site data in your browser.

• Guest profile. A display name and avatar if you created one, plus experience points, coins, streak, unlocked cosmetic items, and which quizzes you have played with your best score on each. This is what makes guest play work without an account.
• Theme preference. Whether you chose light or dark, so the site does not change on you between visits.
• Sound preference. Whether quiz sound effects are on or off.
• Cookie choice. Records the option you selected on the cookie notice, so you are not asked again on every page.

In some special cases we also use cookies provided by trusted third parties. The following section details which third party cookies you might encounter through this site.

Advertising cookies

QuizKite carries advertising, which is what keeps it free and free of a paywall. Advertising is served by Google and its partners, who set their own cookies from their own domains. We do not control these cookies and cannot read them.

• Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
• These cookies may be used to limit how often you see the same advertisement, to measure whether an advertisement worked, and — unless you opt out — to select advertisements based on your browsing.
• Google's use of advertising cookies is described at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.
• You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, or opt out of many vendors at once at aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.com.
• Opting out stops advertising being personalised. It does not remove advertising, which is what pays for the site.

Analytics cookies

We may use an analytics service to help us understand how you use the site and ways that we can improve your experience. These cookies may track things such as how long you spend on the site and the pages that you visit, so we can continue to produce engaging content. Where analytics is running it reports on patterns across visitors in aggregate; it does not tell us who you are, and we do not use it to build profiles of individual readers.

Your choices

When you first arrive you are offered a choice between accepting all cookies and essential cookies only. That choice is recorded in your browser so you are not asked repeatedly, and you can change it by clearing site data and choosing again.

Most browsers also offer a private or incognito window, which discards cookies and local storage when the window closes.

What happens if you disable everything

Reading works normally. Quizzes still play. What breaks is anything that depends on being remembered: your score history and streak will not persist, the theme will reset each visit, the cookie notice will reappear, and signing in will not work, because a session cookie is what keeps you signed in. Nothing is withheld from you as a penalty — those features simply have nowhere to store their state.
