The everyday model of memory is a recording: something happened, it went in, and remembering plays it back with more or less fidelity. Laboratory work has been chipping away at that picture since the 1880s, when Hermann Ebbinghaus measured his own forgetting with lists of nonsense syllables, and it took another blow in the 1930s when Frederic Bartlett found that people retelling an unfamiliar story steadily reshaped it toward their own expectations. What replaced the recording model is messier and more useful. Remembering is treated as a rebuild from fragments, general knowledge and whatever has been encountered since — which explains why confident memories can be wrong in specific, repeatable ways.
