Which gas is the most abundant in Earth's atmosphere?
Conservation runs on a small toolkit of parks, treaties, lists and legal categories. Here is what each of them is for.
Protecting nature turns out to be an administrative craft as much as a scientific one. A species has to be assessed against criteria before anyone can argue it is endangered, which is what the IUCN Red List exists to do. Trade across borders has to be licensed or banned, which is what CITES does. Habitat has to be given a legal status, which is what national parks, wetland designations and marine protected areas do, each with its own rules about what remains permitted inside. Some of this machinery has worked strikingly well. The Montreal Protocol dealt with ozone-depleting chemicals quickly, helped by the fact that a small number of industrial compounds had workable substitutes. Other problems are harder because the damage is diffuse and the causes are ordinary. Why: Returning a missing grazer or predator is often the trigger, and the outcome is deliberately left unplanned rather than managed toward a fixed target.

Why: They form acids in the atmosphere and can fall hundreds of kilometres downwind, which made this one of the first pollution problems to require treaties between states.
