The skeleton is the part of the body most people think they know, right up to the moment someone asks which bone is not attached to any other. Ten questions on the frame and the muscle wrapped around it.
The skeleton is often described as scaffolding, which undersells it. It is a moving structure, rebuilt continuously through life, and every one of its joints is a compromise between how freely a limb can swing and how easily it comes apart. The shoulder is the clearest example: no joint in the body moves further, and none dislocates more often. This quiz stays on solid anatomical ground — names, positions and what each part does. Some of the answers are the ones you would guess, and a few of them, particularly the bones with no obvious neighbours, are not.

Why: The femur runs from the hip to the knee and accounts for roughly a quarter of a person's height. It is also the strongest bone in the body, which is why breaking one usually takes a serious impact.
Answer: A. Patella
Why: The patella is a sesamoid bone, meaning it sits embedded inside a tendon rather than joining other bones at both ends. It works as a pulley, improving the leverage the thigh muscles get when straightening the leg.
Answer: D. Ball and socket
Why: A rounded head sits inside a cup, which allows movement in every direction. The shoulder's socket is much shallower than the hip's, trading stability for range, and that is why it dislocates far more often.
Answer: C. Gluteus maximus
Why: The gluteus maximus extends the hip and does most of the work in standing up from a chair or climbing stairs. The sartorius, running diagonally across the thigh, is the longest muscle but nowhere near the biggest.

Why: The clavicle braces the shoulder away from the ribcage, holding the arm out to the side. It is also the first bone in the body to start hardening in the womb, at around six weeks.

Why: The coccyx is made of three to five small vertebrae fused together, the remnant of a tail. It still earns its keep as an anchor point for pelvic muscles and ligaments.
Answer: D. Tendons
Why: Tendons join muscle to bone, while ligaments tie one bone to another. Cartilage does a third job entirely, cushioning the surfaces where bones meet.
Answer: C. Sutures
Why: Sutures are fibrous joints where the skull plates lock together like jigsaw pieces. They are still open at birth, leaving the soft spots that let a baby's head compress on the way out and the brain keep growing afterwards.
Answer: B. Hyoid
Why: The hyoid sits in the neck just above the larynx, held in place only by muscles and ligaments, and anchors the base of the tongue. Every other bone in the body articulates with at least one neighbour.
Answer: A. Calcaneus
Why: The calcaneus is the heel bone and the largest bone in the foot. The Achilles is the thickest tendon in the body and carries several times body weight with every stride of a run.
