What is the deepest known point in the ocean?
Below about a thousand metres there is no sunlight at all, and almost everything about how animals live there follows from that one fact.
The deep sea is the largest living space on the planet and the least like anywhere else. There is no light, the temperature sits a little above freezing almost everywhere, and food arrives mostly as a slow drizzle of dead material from the sunlit water far above. Animals adapted to that budget tend to be small, slow-growing, long-lived and patient, and many of them make their own light because the only light available is the light they make. Two discoveries changed how the deep sea was understood. Wartime sonar operators found a false sea floor that rose at dusk and sank at dawn, which turned out to be a dense layer of animals migrating vertically every day. Then in 1977 a submersible found hot springs on the sea floor surrounded by dense communities living on chemical energy rather than sunlight, which forced a rethink of where life can be supported at all.

Why: The reaction usually pairs a molecule called luciferin with an enzyme. It is thought to occur in the majority of animals living in open water below the sunlit layer.

Why: The process is called chemosynthesis and usually runs on hydrogen sulfide. Giant tubeworms there have no gut at all and house the bacteria inside themselves.

Why: The ridge system runs for tens of thousands of kilometres and makes new crust continuously, which is why ocean floor is far younger than continental rock.

Why: Some species take decades to reach breeding age, which is why deep-water fisheries collapse quickly and then recover on a timescale of human generations.
