What exploration actually looked like

Columbus didn't discover America. He landed in the Bahamas in October 1492, spent three more voyages convinced he was somewhere off the coast of Asia, and died in 1506 still insisting on it. He didn't set foot on the American mainland until 1498, and by then several million people had been living on it for a very long time.

The word "discovered" is doing an enormous amount of work in most accounts of exploration, and almost all of it is dishonest.

The accurate phrasing is duller and it doesn't cost you anything: first European known to have reached. Once you use it consistently, the story gets stranger and considerably more interesting, because you stop asking who found a place and start asking how anybody got there and survived.

Somebody was always already there

Every landfall in the standard story was a landfall on an inhabited coast. The Americas held tens of millions of people across hundreds of societies. Australia had been continuously occupied for tens of thousands of years. The Pacific islands had been settled deliberately, by navigators sailing into the wind to find them.

The exceptions are few and mostly bleak — Antarctica, some deep ocean rocks, a handful of Atlantic islands. Everywhere else, "discovery" describes an event that happened inside a European head.

Even the European priority is often wrong. The Norse reached North America around the year 1000, and this stopped being a saga argument in 1960 when Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad excavated L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland and found a Norse settlement with turf buildings and iron working. In 2021 a team dated wood from the site to a single year — 1021 — by matching a spike of radiocarbon in the tree rings, caused by a known solar storm in 993, and then counting rings outward to the cut edge. That's a precision archaeology doesn't usually get.

The best navigators in the world had no instruments

Polynesian voyagers settled an area of ocean larger than any land empire, reaching Hawaii, New Zealand and Rapa Nui across thousands of kilometres of open water, deliberately, and returning. They did it without compass, chart, sextant or clock.

The method is a body of memorised knowledge. A star compass — the points on the horizon where specific stars rise and set, held in the head as a mental circle, with the canoe steered relative to it. Swell patterns, which persist from distant weather systems and can be read by the motion of the hull, often lying down. The flight lines of birds that go out to feed and return to land at dusk. Cloud shapes and colours that form over islands. Drifting vegetation. The sea's colour over a lagoon reflected onto the underside of clouds.

Europeans mostly wouldn't believe it, and preferred theories about canoes drifting off course by accident. That argument was settled in 1976, when the double-hulled canoe Hōkūle'a sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti with Mau Piailug, a navigator from Satawal in Micronesia, guiding her without instruments of any kind.

Which is a reminder that European exploration wasn't the discovery of navigation. It was one late tradition among several.

The people who were never on the plaque

Expeditions arriving somewhere new almost always survived on local knowledge, and the records name the people who supplied it far more often than the monuments do.

  • Tupaia, a priest and navigator from Ra'iatea, joined Cook's Endeavour in 1769. He produced a chart naming dozens of islands across a vast stretch of the Pacific, and in New Zealand he could speak with Māori — because the languages are related — which is a large part of why that first contact wasn't worse than it was. He died of illness in Batavia in 1770.
  • Sacagawea, a Lemhi Shoshone woman, travelled with Lewis and Clark from 1805. Her presence with an infant signalled to nations along the route that the party wasn't a war band. When the expedition needed horses to cross the Rockies, the Shoshone chief they negotiated with, Cameahwait, turned out to be her brother.
  • Malintzin, also called Doña Marina, was given to Cortés as a slave in 1519 and became the interpreter the entire Spanish campaign in Mexico ran through, working Nahuatl to Maya while Jerónimo de Aguilar worked Maya to Spanish. Indigenous accounts of the conquest depict her constantly. Her position was not a free one.
  • Sidi Mubarak Bombay crossed Africa repeatedly as a guide and caravan leader for Burton, Speke and Stanley — arguably covering more of the continent than any of the men whose names the expeditions carry.
  • Matthew Henson spent more than twenty years on Arctic expeditions with Robert Peary, spoke Inuktitut, and was the member of the party who could build a sledge and handle dogs properly. The 1909 push towards the pole included four Inughuit men — Ootah, Egingwah, Seegloo and Ooqueah — without whom nobody was going anywhere.
  • Tenzing Norgay reached the summit of Everest in 1953 with Edmund Hillary. Hillary spent the rest of his life declining to say who stepped up first.

Vasco da Gama's crossing of the Indian Ocean in 1498 makes the point most sharply. He didn't find his way to India. He picked up a pilot at Malindi on the East African coast who knew the monsoon route perfectly well, because ships had been sailing it for centuries. The pilot's identity is disputed — the popular attribution to the famous navigator Ahmad ibn Majid is doubted by most historians — but the arrangement isn't in doubt at all.

Finding out where you are, part one: easy

Latitude is straightforward, and sailors had it for centuries. Measure the angle between the horizon and Polaris and you have your latitude in the northern hemisphere, near enough. Measure the sun's height at local noon, correct for the date using a table, and you have it anywhere.

The instruments got steadily better — the mariner's astrolabe, the cross-staff, the backstaff, then John Hadley's octant in 1731 and the sextant that grew out of it. The sextant's trick is using mirrors to bring the image of the sun down onto the horizon so both are in the eyepiece together, which means a rolling deck doesn't wreck the reading.

This is why so many old sailing routes look inefficient on a modern map. Ships would run north or south to the latitude of their destination, then turn and sail along it until land turned up. It's slower, but you knew one of your two coordinates exactly.

Finding out where you are, part two: nearly impossible

Longitude has no natural marker. The sky gives you no equivalent of Polaris for east-west position, because the Earth turns underneath it.

What it does give you is time. The planet rotates 15 degrees an hour, so if you know the local time where you are — trivial, from the sun — and the time at a reference place simultaneously, the difference converts straight into longitude. One hour is 15 degrees. Four seconds of error is a nautical mile at the equator.

The problem is the reference clock. Pendulums don't work at sea. Temperature changes the length of metal parts, humidity swells wood, and salt corrodes everything. So navigators used dead reckoning instead: known starting point, compass heading, speed and elapsed time. Speed was measured by throwing a weighted log over the stern attached to a line knotted at fixed intervals, letting it run for the duration of a sandglass, and counting knots — which is where the unit comes from.

Dead reckoning accumulates error and has no way of correcting itself. Currents, leeway, a compass thrown off by iron cargo, a helmsman a few degrees out for a week. After a month at sea you might be hundreds of miles from where the chart said. In 1707 a British fleet returning from Gibraltar misjudged its position and ran onto the Isles of Scilly. Four ships were lost and something like 1,400 to 2,000 men died.

Parliament passed the Longitude Act in 1714, offering up to £20,000 — a colossal sum — for a practical method. John Harrison, a Lincolnshire carpenter turned clockmaker, spent decades on it, producing a sequence of sea clocks and finally H4, a large watch, which was tested on a voyage to Jamaica in 1761–62 and lost only a handful of seconds. He couldn't get paid without a fight, and the fight took years.

The rival method nearly won. Lunar distances used the Moon's movement against the background stars as a clock in the sky: measure the angle, look it up in tables, get the reference time. Tobias Mayer's tables and Nevil Maskelyne's Nautical Almanac from 1767 made it workable. It didn't need an expensive machine, and it did need about four hours of calculation per fix. Cook carried K1, a copy of Harrison's watch made by Larcum Kendall, on his second voyage and used both methods against each other. Chronometers won once they got cheap enough, which took another fifty years.

Scurvy killed more sailors than anything else

The numbers are hard to take in. Magellan's expedition left Spain in 1519 with five ships and around 270 men. One ship came home in 1522 with 18. George Anson's squadron sailed in 1740 with roughly 1,900 men and lost something like 1,300 of them, the overwhelming majority to scurvy rather than to the Spanish they'd been sent to fight.

The disease is vitamin C deficiency, and the mechanism explains why it looks so grotesque. The body can't synthesise ascorbic acid, and without it can't properly build collagen — the protein holding skin, blood vessels, gums and scar tissue together. So the body starts coming apart in reverse order. Gums swell and bleed, teeth loosen, old wounds that healed years earlier open up again, and old broken bones re-fracture. It's fatal in a couple of months on a diet of salt meat and biscuit, and it's reversed in days by fresh food.

James Lind ran a trial aboard HMS Salisbury in 1747 that's often cited as one of the first controlled clinical experiments: twelve scurvy patients, six pairs, six different treatments including cider, vinegar, seawater and two oranges with a lemon. The citrus pair recovered so fast that one was back on duty within a week.

Then nothing happened for nearly fifty years. Lind buried the result in a long book, mixed it with theories of his own, and the Admiralty didn't issue lemon juice across the fleet until 1795, largely on Gilbert Blane's pushing. When it finally happened it was transformative — the Navy's manpower problem more or less dissolved.

And then the knowledge decayed. The Navy switched from Mediterranean lemons to West Indian limes, which contain considerably less vitamin C, and the juice was often boiled and stored in copper, which destroys more of it. Since the substitution looked equivalent, the failures got blamed on tainted food or bad air, and scurvy reappeared on nineteenth and early twentieth century polar expeditions among men who genuinely believed they'd taken precautions.

Everything else that could kill you

Shipworm — a saltwater clam, not a worm — bored through hulls in warm water and could destroy a ship in a season, which is why copper sheathing mattered so much when it arrived. Fresh water went foul in the barrel within weeks, hence beer, wine and later grog. Ship's biscuit was baked dry enough to last years and got infested anyway; sailors ate it in the dark or tapped it on the table first.

Then dysentery, typhus, malaria, yellow fever, storms, fire, and simply not finding land where the chart said land was. Losing a third of a crew was ordinary. Losing all of them wasn't rare either.

Against that, the actual mapping work was extraordinarily patient. Cook's charts of Newfoundland and of the New Zealand coast were made by running survey — fixing positions from the ship with repeated angle measurements, sounding constantly, sketching the profile of the land as it appeared from seaward. His 1770 New Zealand chart was still in practical use in the twentieth century, with two significant errors in the whole outline.

Nobody was funding curiosity

The romantic version has explorers driven by wonder. The paperwork doesn't support that at all.

What was being financed was pepper, nutmeg, cloves, silver, sugar, cod, whale oil, sea otter pelts, and a shorter route to any of them. The Dutch East India Company, chartered in 1602, was a joint-stock corporation with the legal power to wage war and make treaties. Chartered companies ran much of what gets filed under exploration.

Cook's first voyage is the clean illustration. The public purpose was scientific and real — sail to Tahiti and observe the 1769 transit of Venus, part of an international effort to measure the distance from the Earth to the Sun by timing the planet's crossing from widely separated points. He also carried sealed orders from the Admiralty, to be opened afterwards, instructing him to go looking for the great southern continent that was assumed to be down there. Science was the visible half of a strategic voyage.

What arrived with the ships

This has to be said plainly rather than left as a footnote, because the consequences dwarf everything else in the story.

The largest killer was disease. Smallpox, measles, influenza and typhus reached populations with no prior exposure and no immunity, and the death rates in the Americas over the century and a half after 1492 were catastrophic — most estimates put the population decline at well over half, and in the Caribbean at close to total. Much of that spread ahead of the Europeans themselves, so later arrivals encountered societies already wrecked and recorded an emptier continent than the one that had existed.

The violence was deliberate as well as accidental. Columbus's administration on Hispaniola imposed tribute quotas enforced by mutilation and was brutal enough that the Spanish crown had him arrested. Conquest, forced labour systems and land seizure followed the routes wherever they led. The Atlantic slave trade grew directly out of the same shipping infrastructure, and moved an estimated 12 million people across the ocean.

Something else to keep in mind when reading any of the original accounts: they were legal documents as much as travelogues. Claiming territory required a written record of arrival, planting a flag and reading a declaration to people who couldn't understand it. Describing the inhabitants as few, primitive or absent strengthened the claim. The sources are evidence, and they're also arguments.

The map was only blank from one side

The framing of an "age of discovery" starting around 1400 quietly deletes a lot of traffic.

Zheng He commanded seven Chinese treasure fleet voyages between 1405 and 1433, reaching Southeast Asia, India, Arabia and East Africa with hundreds of ships and tens of thousands of men — far larger than anything Europe put to sea for centuries afterwards. Then the Ming court changed policy and the voyages stopped.

Ibn Battuta left Tangier in 1325 and spent nearly thirty years travelling through North and West Africa, Arabia, Persia, India, the Maldives and China, covering something in the order of 100,000 kilometres. The Indian Ocean he crossed was a working commercial system with regular monsoon sailing seasons, established ports and multilingual merchant communities. Europeans entered it. They didn't open it.

Even the dragons are mostly invented. The phrase hic sunt dracones — here be dragons — appears on essentially one surviving object, the Hunt-Lenox Globe of around 1510. Cartographers filled empty space with decoration because empty space looked unfinished, not because there's any sign they expected monsters.

The blanks on those maps were blanks in European knowledge. They aren't blanks on the ground, and there's almost always somebody standing in them who could have given directions.
